A dispute over the pirate treasure their picnic sees them split into boy pirates and girl pirates. Fireman Sam is due to take the children on a scouting trip when he is called away. Norman sees this as his chance to become the Pioneers leader. Elvis is booked to sing on a local TV show and dreams of life outside the Fire Service as a singing superstar.
Norman's cousin Derek comes to stay and seems to be a gigantic goody two-shoes. Station Officer Steele offers to help Charlie catch fish, claiming to know all there is to know about the ocean. James's walkie-talkie tunes in to the fire station's radio waves and transmits news of all the emergencies happening around Pontypandy.
Norman is eager to go out and play with his friends, but then he realizes it's Dilys's birthday! Trevor is using Sat Nav Sally, but the system leads them the wrong way and the bus gets stuck in the wet sand just as the tide starts to come in. James has a new remote control airplane that he and Norman are playing with.
