Why spit in a dogs mouth

Dont really let dogs lick me at all. But my last girl was a shocker for sneaking a lick. Maybe she had some chi in her. I've accidentally clicked teeth with my dog before and my aim in life is to never let that happen again!

To all you guys who disbelieve persephone never heard of the armpit thing the spotted devil soft working dogs? Kavik never heard of spitting food! Can you feed your dogs from your mouth? Oh and yes farting at each other does work if your into that sort of thing dont discount anything unless you have tried it people and dont discredit anyone you dont know because you might get a response you might not like i would really like to correspond with you guys on a regular basis but i won't take crap.

To know it worked you would have to spit in the dogs mouth and do no further training at that point. If you magically had the best dog ever then it worked. If your dog is badly behaved, it didn't. You can't say spitting works when you are also offering training afterwards.

I would imagine if human spit was so magical the world would know about it by now, or we'd be using it on kids too :. I almost do - ie if I find something chewy in my food I don't want to eat - the dog gets it eventually. But I'm not interested tongue kisses with my dog - too many germ phobes medical practicioners in my ancestry. Tho I've probably got less change of getting a disease from my dog than another human.

My trusted source has no info on the Australian Greyhound racing people. That's a whole nother problem.

What I do think is that we should not punish everyone for the bad behaviour of a few - not farmers, greyhound owners, dog breeders, agility trainers The idea that the whole sport should be shut down because a few are atrocious or even a lot - smacks of the work of PETA - and they won't say how many healthy pets they PTS every year. They want us all to be vegan with no pets.

The ultimate result of that will be no animals on the planet other than humans. When I tried the food spitting, I used human food obviously cheese and cocktail frankfurts and cabanossi. Had to teach him to catch it! I got the idea from a Leerburg video, I've been looking but can't remember what it was called. I wouldn't do it now, I can think of lots of other ways I would teach the behaviour, but at the time I thought it was worth a try.

Found a video! Don't be too critical, it was a looooong time ago! I recall Martin McKenna the dog whisperer putting his finger in his mouth then rubbing the finger inside the mouth of anxious dogs to calm them down. Well I think that was the purpose. A bit like when you see one dog licking another dogs mouth to calm them down.

Never heard of spitting in it though and never seen a dog spit in another dog's mouth either so I'm not sure of the purpose or how someone even decided it was a good idea! I've not seen the mother dog lick the puppy's mouth - but more lick the whole puppy - in much the same movements as we pat a dog. Which usually does a good job of calming a dog, also ear strokes. Haven't seem drooly dog mums in action eg blood hound or dogue de bordeaux - maybe they spit in their puppies' mouths more?

Prev 1 2 Next Page 1 of 2. Recommended Posts. Jackfeatherfoot Posted September 9, I didn't expect it to work as my hubby is Top Dog in our house. So we just presumed that Pumpit would follow the 'chain of command' but No, she is my dog and all my dog. Has anybody else ever tried it? Got nothing to lose except a little spit Erny 4 posts.

No ive never tried it and never heard of it, mine are loyal to me because i feed them and do everything else for them too. But whatever works for you. If you took away all the training, hard work you put in with the dogs, and stop making an effort to be alpha in the pack, do you think spitting in the dogs mouth will still work? A dog will be loyal to the pack leader not someones spit.

If you had an animal orphaned at birth it was said that if you breathed into the animals face and your smell was the first the animal was exposed to it would assume you were it's mother and bond to you as such. Dear lord I hope not, that would mean all those little ones I helped after being born by caesar would have been wondering why they had two mummies :D.

Lucky it wasn't my OH's smell, 'cause sometime he smells disgusting We should probably start an old wives tales thread! I haven't heard the spitting in the mouth one, but I have heard the spitting in the foodbowl one. The idea apparently is that in the wild top dogs eat first, and their saliva is all over the kill, so you should spit on your dog's food.

COME on everyone get over it. I recently has a dog behaviorist at my place and asked his opinion on it and he said that he too has heard of spitting in the food and that it is old school. As long as you and the rest of the family have eaten before the dog he can smell it on you so then you are establishing the alpha role.

My dogs only eat in the morning, so we don't eat before them - I have found if you aren't able to eat before them, then using a program like Triangle of Temptation is really useful, the dog learns they need to look to you for permission to eat and are focused on you and not the food.

Works fantastically. I agree with Anita that there are some corkers of old wives tails out there! Has anyone seen the movie Snow Dogs where they tell Cuban Gooding Jnr that the dog will respect you if you nip its ear? Pumpitdog, nothing against you at all - I am sure the reason your dogs respect you and see you as alpha is because you provide a strong pack order and teach them good manners and training, not cos you spat in its mouth :D. Never heard of spitting in their mouth, but I do sometimes spit food and Diesel has to catch it But this is for focus and eye contact in obedience.

We normally eat before the dogs, just because of routine, not any other reason, and of course if we are going out and are going to be late home, they are fed before we leave so we don't need to feed them when we get back. I've never heard of that, I just fed my guys their breakfast but they were served in clean dry stainless steel bowls and I mixed their breakfast with a clean spoon from the kitchen. If I spat in it, I'd have to throw it in the bin, I couldn;t feed it to them ;.
